Prestigious Refurbishment for the Scottish Parliament
Residing in Holyrood, Edinburgh, the Scottish Parliament is one of the most prestigious legislators in the United Kingdom. The building, built in 1999, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II, with the first parliament session held in 2004. The building’s impressive post-modern architecture has won it critical acclaim and many respected awards, and it’s been hailed as one of the most innovative designs in modern Britain.
The vast three year project started with the refurbishment of the main entrance, and the current soffits. PanDOMO by ARDEX was chosen for this project, and Artstone, an experienced PanDOMO applicator, as the chosen craftsmen, whose experience working with PanDOMO products enabled them to create a wall finish that enhanced the buildings design, and create a sense of light to open up the main entrance.
Installing 2500 x 1000mm Porcelain Tiles in Victoria Street
80-100 Victoria Street is a landmark commercial building sitting in the renowned Cardinal Place Development. As one of the most recognisable sites in Victoria, it provides high quality office accommodation and is currently occupied by brands including Microsoft and EDF Energy.
Earlier this year, refurbishments were completed on several areas of the building, with the project including some 1600m² of newly installed floor tiles on the ground and first floor lobby areas. Supplied by Pentagon Tiles, each slab measured 2500mm long x 1000mm wide x 6mm deep, presenting a significant challenge to the installation team. Andrew Reid, National Business Development Manager for ARDEX, provided the specification for the project, collaborating with Pentagon Tiles, Collins Construction and Quadrant, the main and tiling contractors respectively, to ensure the optimum system was recommended. Commenting on the project, Andrew said “The sheer size of the tiles presented a real challenge, and a system was required that would not only help Quadrant during installation, but would also provide the client with a long-term crack-free finish. After going on-site, we were able to recommend a full specification that could achieve this and give confidence to all parties involved.”

ARDEX Renovation Proves Soaring Success
In 2014 Glasgow played host to the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and celebrated the Year of Homecoming Scotland. Expecting in excess of 1.25 million guests over the summer period, it was announced that Glasgow International airport would benefit from a £17 million makeover.
One of the most significant and comprehensive upgrades to the main terminal since it opened in 1966, the refurbishment works included the installation of a new floor to the Central Pier. Contracted to manage the renovation of the 3000m² pier floor was P Layden and Son, a flooring specialist providing a range of floors and fitting services to the Glaswegian area. Richard Layden, at P Layden and Son, explains “This was a particularly challenging job as the Central Pier was part of the original build making the existing flooring almost 50 years old. When removing the old flooring we were faced with a number of different substrates, and it was essential that the chosen product could be used with confidence over all of these.”
